Barcelona's Park Guell to cut visitor numbers by half a million by 2027
"ONE of Barcelona's main tourist attractions will see a dramatic decrease in visitors before the year 2027, approved by the Barcelona City Council on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 22. Park Güell, an iconic complex of parks and gardens designed by famed Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, will see 500,000 fewer visitors, with a drop from the current 4.5 million available tickets to 4 million, to be implemented progressively over two years."
"The measure plans to decrease the ever-increasing pressure of tourism on the area and especially in the famous park, as well as relieve nearby neighbourhoods, in particular Horta-Guinardó and Gràcia, of the unmanageable number of visitors each year. In total, there will be an 11 per cent daily reduction in visitors, amounting to 1,365 fewer visitors each day, and around 130 fewer each hour."
"Last year, ticket prices to enter Park Güell increased from €10 to €18, which nearly doubled Park Güell's revenue (which before the hike in 2023, was around €34 million annually). The reduction of guests by 500,000 is not expected to decrease the park's earnings by a concerning degree. The park has also switched the method of acquiring tickets in order to stave off unmanageable tourist numbers, moving from both online and in-person to solely online."
Barcelona City Council approved a reduction of Park Güell's annual available tickets from 4.5 million to 4 million, to be implemented progressively over two years before 2027. The cut removes 500,000 visits annually, an 11% daily reduction equal to about 1,365 fewer visitors per day and roughly 130 fewer per hour. The measure aims to relieve tourism pressure on the park and nearby Horta-Guinardó and Gràcia neighbourhoods. Ticket prices rose from €10 to €18 in 2023, nearly doubling revenue; the visitor reduction is not expected to significantly harm earnings. Ticket sales moved to online-only and local bus services were adjusted to minimise congestion.
