Barcelona to add 1,000 CCTV cameras
"Barcelona is about to get a lot more eyes on its streets. City Hall has confirmed plans to install 1,000 new CCTV cameras over the coming years, a major jump from the 160 currently in place. Mayor Jaume Collboni said the first cameras will appear in Ciutat Vella and along the waterfront, two of the city's busiest - and often most troubled - areas."
"Installing more cameras means dealing with red tape, as each one needs court approval and yearly renewal. Albert Batlle, Barcelona's deputy mayor for security, admitted the process is "slow and complicated", but insisted it is worth it. There are also concerns over privacy. To address this, City Hall has ruled out using facial recognition technology. The cameras will be there to deter crime and help police, not to track individuals."
Barcelona will install 1,000 new CCTV cameras, increasing from 160, with initial deployments in Ciutat Vella and along the waterfront. The first 500 cameras are scheduled to be operational before 2027. The expansion aims to reduce pickpocketing and street crime and to restore confidence in public spaces. Each camera requires court approval and annual renewal, creating administrative delays. Facial recognition technology will not be used; cameras are intended to deter crime and assist police, not to track individuals. The plan was coordinated with Catalonia's High Court of Justice to address legal and privacy concerns.
