"FOLLOWING the withdrawal of Renfe's low-cost AVLO rates, officials from online travel booking platform Trainline have stated that journeys between Barcelona and Madrid have become a whopping 40 per cent more expensive. For the month of September, the average price of a high-speed journey between the two Spanish cities rose to €80 during the week and as high as €150 on the weekends, a sharp increase compared to the second quarter of the year, when the average price for the aforementioned journey was €63."
"Starting September 8, Renfe had officially ditched its AVLO low-cost ticket options, promising that the same "frequencies, schedules, and competitive prices" would be upheld despite the removal of the service. This directly led to the uptick in prices, according to general director of Trainline Spain, Pedro García, citing data from their Web site. However, the change has also been noted among all train operators, not just Renfe."
Train fares between Barcelona and Madrid rose roughly 40% after Renfe withdrew its AVLO low-cost options. In September the average high-speed fare reached €80 on weekdays and up to €150 on weekends, compared with a €63 average in the second quarter. Renfe ended AVLO on September 8 while promising the same "frequencies, schedules, and competitive prices" would continue. Trainline's general director Pedro García attributed the price increase to AVLO's removal, citing website data. The price rise has been observed across multiple train operators. The Barcelona–Madrid corridor recorded a record 3.9 million passengers in Q2 and is forecast to reach 15 million by year end.
