Barcelona dump former Premier League star to ease financial pressures
"Barcelona have reportedly reached an agreement with Oriol Romeu that will see the experienced midfielder leave on a free transfer 12 months before his contract was due to expire. The 33-year-old came through the club's La Masia academy but made just one first-team appearance before joining Chelsea in 2011. Spells at Valencia, Stuttgart, Southampton, for whom he played over 200 times, and Girona followed before he secured a dream move back to Barca in 2023, principally as a replacement for Sergio Busquets."
"He was a regular under Xavi for much of the 2023/24 season but new boss Hansi Flick made it clear early on that he would not be part of his plans and he was swiftly shipped out to Girona on loan. He failed to make it on to Barca's pre-season tour of Asia this year and his departure was inevitable, even though it took sometime for the severance package to be successfully negotiated."
Oriol Romeu, 33, has agreed to leave Barcelona on a free transfer with 12 months remaining on his contract. He progressed through La Masia but made only one first-team appearance before moving to Chelsea in 2011. Subsequent spells included Valencia, Stuttgart, Southampton—where he made over 200 appearances—and Girona. Romeu returned to Barcelona in 2023 primarily as a replacement for Sergio Busquets and was a regular under Xavi for much of the 2023/24 season. New coach Hansi Flick excluded him from plans, leading to a loan to Girona and exclusion from Barcelona's 2024 pre-season tour. The severance package has been completed, freeing wages and prompting interest from other La Liga sides and MLS clubs.
