Credit : Juanjo Molina, Shutterstock The AP-7, the busy motorway linking France to Spain along the Catalan coast, has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. After a steady rise in traffic and a worrying spike in serious accidents, the Catalan government has stepped in with an emergency road-safety plan - and drivers will start feeling the changes very soon."
"According to data from the Catalan interior ministry, overall traffic is up by 3.2 per cent this year, while the number of heavy-goods vehicles on the motorway has risen by 2.6 per cent. In the Terres de l'Ebre area, which lies in southern Catalonia, traffic-monitoring stations have recorded increases of as much as 5 per cent for both total vehicles and lorries."
Catalonia has launched an emergency road-safety plan for the AP-7 after traffic rose sharply following the removal of tolls. The interior minister announced around 20 urgent measures, including a major reduction in speed limits on a hazardous stretch south of Tarragona. Overall traffic increased by 3.2% this year and heavy-goods vehicles rose 2.6%, with some Terres de l'Ebre stations recording up to 5% increases for total vehicles and lorries. Fifteen people have died on the AP-7 so far this year, more than twice the number expected for 2024, and authorities are acting urgently to improve safety.
