Ken Paxton won the Texas Senate primary runoff on Tuesday night, with the Associated Press calling the race around 9:01 p.m. EST. Paxton led by more than 25 percentage points as he reached just above 500,000 votes while about 49% of votes were in. The runoff followed a May 3 primary in which Sen. John Cornyn received the most votes, but rules required a runoff between Cornyn and the second-place finisher, Paxton. More than $100 million was spent on ads during the primary. Trump endorsed Paxton on May 19, surprising some Republicans who expected support for Cornyn. Paxton faced controversy including impeachment by the GOP-controlled Texas House for abusing office, with allegations involving assistance to a donor connected to an affair. Democrat James Talarico is the nominee for the general election.
"Some Republicans had argued that Paxton's scandal-plagued reputation could give Democrats a real chance of winning the Senate seat. Democrat James Talarico has the party's nomination. Paxton's controversies include an impeachment by the GOP-controlled Texas House of Representatives for abusing his office. The articles alleged that Paxton used his office to assist a donor, Nate Paul, who employed a woman who was having an affair with Paxton, at the attorney general's behest. In his endorsement, Trump called Paxton extremely loyal to him."
