A FedEx cargo plane nearly collided with a Southwest Airlines jet at Austin's airport due to poor visibility from fog. A new technology called Surf-A, developed by Honeywell, provides pilots with direct collision warnings on runways. This system could have given the FedEx pilots an additional 28 seconds to react during the incident. The National Transportation Safety Board has recommended that the FAA mandate surface detection equipment at all airports to improve safety.
