In January 2025, Austin and Travis County's point-in-time count revealed over 3,200 individuals sleeping in tents, shelters, or cars, marking a significant 36% increase from the previous count in 2023. The counting process, managed by the Ending Community Homelessness Coalition (ECHO), highlights concerns about potential undercounts as many individuals may not be easily identified. Despite ongoing efforts and increased funding from the city, challenges persist in accurately addressing homelessness. Many experts stress the need for comprehensive strategies to tackle the deeper issues contributing to homelessness in the area.
"You're always going to miss some folks," said Liz Schoenfeld, the CEO of Lifeworks, a nonprofit that works with young people experiencing homelessness in the Austin area. "Some folks are really good at staying undetected."
This past January, hundreds of volunteers found 3,238 people considered to be homeless across the city and county. However, many agree it's an undercount.
