Jeff Ulbrich says Falcons will use committee to replace Divine Deablo
"It takes a village to replace Divine Deablo, apparently. Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich made that clear on Wednesday in remarks to media, when he said a mix of linebackers and defensive backs will be deployed to fill his role. Part of that is owing to Deablo, a converted safety, having a mix of linebacker and defensive back traits the Falcons coveted this offseason; they don't really have another player ready to roll."
"Losing Deablo for any length of time will definitely hurt a resurgent Falcons defense, which scuffled a little bit without him on Sunday night against the 49ers. Deablo's proven to be so good at reading what opposing offenses are trying to do and getting there to stymie things, helping to paper over a so-so run defense and bolster a strong pass defense."
Divine Deablo’s hybrid skill set as a converted safety with linebacker traits created a unique role that the Falcons lack a single replacement for. The team plans to deploy a situational committee of linebackers and defensive backs to cover his responsibilities, with personnel choices dictated by down, distance, and game situation. JD Bertrand and Josh Woods are likeliest for run downs, while DeMarcco Hellams and Jordan Fuller project to handle passing downs. Hellams may receive extended opportunities given his role as the third safety and strong tackling. Deablo’s potential placement on injured reserve would significantly affect defensive performance.
