Adriana Smith, a 31-year-old woman from Georgia, was declared brain dead while pregnant and delivered her baby boy, Chance, by emergency cesarean section. After suffering severe headaches and being briefly treated, Smith was found with blood clots in her brain. Despite being eight weeks pregnant when declared brain dead, her family faced legal challenges regarding her life support. Georgia's laws complicate such medical decisions, as the state's abortion restrictions apply. Her mother is advocating for prayers for Smith's premature son, who is in the NICU.
Newkirk said her daughter had intense headaches more than four months ago and went to Atlanta's Northside Hospital, where she received medication and was released.
Newkirk said Smith loved being a nurse at Emory. She also has a 7-year-old son. Her family celebrated her 31st birthday Sunday with several advocacy groups.
