Why can't we have the Braves on TBS again?
"The Braves on TBS was fun, but you couldn't see every Braves game there. As far back as 1990, TBS had a small portion of games that weren't on their network. I don't know the reason for this exactly, but they maxed out around 155 a year. I don't think anybody noticed until 1991 when they suddenly were in a pennant race with the Dodgers."
"From a TV money perspective, why would we want it on basic cable anyway? Remember, the Braves don't have a stake in Warner Bros Discovery (or the abomination it might turn into), which is TBS' parent company. The Braves are better off having a wholly owned channel. But if they're smart, maybe they can acquire some of the names, logos, and music of the old days."
The Braves have split from their FanDuel-sponsored TV broadcaster and a new broadcast partner is pending. Teams are restricted from broadcasting games into other teams' territories, ending wide national carriage like WGN, WOR, and TBS once provided. TBS historically limited Braves coverage to around 155 games per year, leading to blackout gaps filled by regional outlets such as SportsSouth beginning in 1992. From a financial perspective, the Braves gain more by operating a wholly owned channel, potentially leveraging Turner-era branding and content, while navigating carve-outs from NBC, Peacock, Apple, and similar rights holders.
