The Savannah Bananas, a fun and innovative collegiate summer baseball team since 2016, has gained popularity not only for their gameplay but also for entertaining traditions like the 'Banana Baby' ceremony. This event involves a chosen infant in a banana costume, reminiscent of a scene from Disney's 'The Lion King,' where the players and crowd participate in an uplifting celebration. This tradition started the team's entertainment focus and has become highly sought after, showcasing the Bananas' knack for creating memorable experiences and engaging their fanbase through unique branding.
If your favorite part of baseball is singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch, you're going to ... well, go bananas ... for the pregame entertainment from the Savannah Bananas baseball team.
'Banana Baby' has been one of the longest standing traditions we have in our history. We actually did it on the first game back in 2016," says Zack Frongillo, director of operations for the team.
The Savannah Bananas started in 2016 as a collegiate summer baseball league. Husband and wife team owners Jesse and Emily Cole turned the players into social media sensations by creating a unique brand of gimmick-packed baseball they call "Banana Ball."
"We actually have a waiting list for the Baby," says Frongillo. "Starting four years ago people would find out they're pregnant and then email us first and say, 'We're pregnant. We're going to be in Savannah next April. Can we please do the Banana Baby?'"
