Carlos Acuna pitched a complete game for Birmingham High, keeping the leadoff batter off base in most innings and producing key strikeouts through the seventh. Although he was close to being pulled, he finished the game with a fly ball out to right field. Birmingham won 4-1 and advanced to the City Section Open Division championship against El Camino Real, which won 4-3 over Granada Hills. Acuna threw 102 pitches, finished the season 11-0, struck out seven, walked three, and allowed four hits. He relied on his slider when in trouble, and the only run scored against him came in the sixth inning. He will play infield next, with Saturday’s game as his final appearance this season.
"He'll be playing third base or second base, and that's fine with him. "I love this team," Acuna said. "I want to play one last game." When in trouble, Acuna turned to his slider as his out pitch. The only run he gave up came in the sixth inning after Xavier Allen had a double and scored on a ground out. JJ Rodriguez contributed two RBIs for Birmingham and JuJu Monroe-Truitt had two hits and one RBI."
