The Atlanta Braves focus heavily on covering innings due to their struggling pitching staff. Bryce Elder's role has often been as a fill-in rather than a core starter. Despite a breakout season in 2023, Elder has not been prioritized, especially post-All-Star Break. His current performance seems to indicate a regression, leading to questions about his future with the team. The Braves' lack of urgent needs this season may lead them to consider parting ways with Elder in the offseason for a more effective replacement.
The Braves are obsessed with covering innings. Brian Snitker talks about it... The pitchers themselves talk about it, and I have no trouble believing that guys like Elder have internalized the messaging.
It seems like the Braves won't want to part ways with Elder... just because he exists and can, at least in concept, sop innings, the quality of which is irrelevant at this point.
I don't think the Braves have ever... been huge fans of Bryce Elder. There's no real way to know, but he's served as a fill-in guy more often than not.
Elder is kind of pseudo-devolving in a really weird way, and at this point I just don't know if he needs a reset somewhere else.
