In a thrilling session in Miami, rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli, driving for Mercedes, clinched pole position for the sprint race, finishing just 0.045 seconds ahead of reigning champion Oscar Piastri. This victory is significant for Antonelli as he has stepped in to replace Lewis Hamilton. Max Verstappen qualified fourth after missing media day due to personal reasons, while his teammate Yuki Tsunoda struggled, qualifying in 18th. Notably, veterans like Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton are also in the mix, with Hamilton qualifying seventh.
"Yes mate! Come on! Come on!" Antonelli said over the radio after securing the pole spot.
Antonelli replaced seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes this year and has already been tipped for great things.
Antonelli, 18, beat championship leader Oscar Piastri by 0.045 seconds to top a competitive F1 session for the first time in his young career.
Red Bull will only have one driver fighting at the top end of the field in the sprint, with Verstappen's teammate Yuki Tsunoda failing to make it out of the SQ1 session.
