""Tom Hanks has done more for the positive portrayal of the American service member, more for the caring of the American veteran, their caregivers and their family, and more for the American space program and all branches of government than many other Americans,""
""preparing cadets to lead, fight, and win.""
The West Point Association of Graduates canceled a planned ceremony and parade honoring Tom Hanks on Sept. 25 while maintaining that he will receive the Sylvanus Thayer Award. A U.S. official who said he was not authorized to speak publicly confirmed the cancellation. An internal email from Mark Bieger, president and CEO of the West Point Association of Graduates, said the Army needed to focus on its core mission "preparing cadets to lead, fight, and win." The alumni association had announced the award in June, citing Hanks' veteran advocacy, memorial fundraising, work with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, and military-focused films.
