'We are all part of this intergalactic universe': Saya Woolfalk's solo show immerses viewers in her "Empathic Universe"
Briefly

Saya Woolfalk's exhibition "Empathic Universe" at the Museum of Arts and Design showcases two decades of her work exploring fictional hybrid races that embody interconnectedness. The exhibition unfolds in five chapters, featuring a range of media from textiles to immersive digital installations. Woolfalk's artistic journey began with her experiences in Brazil, which inform her commentary on colonial encounters and utopia. The project highlights the significance of mythology and feminist theory, culminating in a visionary world that challenges traditional narratives of race and identity.
I started when I came back to New York from Brazil with Winter Garden: Hybrid Love Objects. It was before I had fully conceptualised the Empathic Universe, but it represents a creation myth.
The Empathic Universe came into sharper focus around 2006 through my experiences in the Whitney Independent Study Program, where we explored utopian possibilities within our community.
