Since 1990, artist Theo Jansen has created kinetic sculptures known as Strandbeesten that move across the North Sea shores powered by wind. Each summer, he constructs a new creature and dismantles it by autumn, forming a unique fossil record of creative evolution housed in a former cable factory known as the Strandbeesten Mortuary. The exhibition showcases the evolution of these machines from simple forms to intricate creatures. Jansen aspires to eventually create a beast that can live indefinitely but continues to experiment with his creations on the beach for now.
Each summer since 1990, the artist has built a new creature to roam the windy shores of the North Sea, only to declare it 'dead' by autumn.
Housed in a former cable factory, the Strandbeesten Mortuary traces their development from simple forms to intricate, lifelike machines.
These kinetic sculptures, which scuttle across sand on wind power alone, now form a striking fossil record of creativity and evolution.
Jansen hopes one day to build a beast that lives forever - but for now, he continues to experiment on the beach.
