Veteran Hong Kong Curator Tobias Berger on Asia's Next-Generation Foundations | Artnet News
"Both Serakai Studio and Tanoto Art Foundation are driven by individuals who not only have the financial means to experiment on the cultural frontier, they are also extremely well-educated and well-informed about the contemporary art world. This means the decision-making processes at these organizations are much faster than that at public institutions. There is a greater willingness to experiment with new ideas and flexibility."
Tobias Berger, a German-born curator based in Hong Kong, has shaped Asia Pacific's art landscape over two decades through senior positions at M+, Tai Kwun, and the Nam June Paik Art Center. Recently shifting to the private sector, he now serves as co-founder and curatorial director of Serakai Studio, a cultural think tank under real estate firm Serakai founded by art patron Benjamin Cha, and as strategic advisor for Singapore's Tanoto Art Foundation led by collector Belinda Tanoto. Serakai Studio opened Gold, an experimental salon space in Hong Kong's Wong Chuk Hang gallery district. Berger notes that private organizations led by well-educated, financially resourced individuals enable faster decision-making and greater willingness to experiment compared to public institutions.
