The Bukhara Biennial opened on September 5, 2025, featuring over 70 site-specific commissions by more than 200 participants from 39 countries in Bukhara's historic core. The event was commissioned by the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF) and Commissioner Gayane Umerova and curated under the theme Recipes for Broken Hearts. The ten-week program occupies newly restored madrassas, caravanserais, and mosques within the UNESCO World Heritage listing. Organizers positioned the biennial within a broader master plan that treats culture as a catalyst for urban transformation and heritage renewal. Plans include a culture-first district, six cultural routes, pedestrian trails along the Shakhrud Canal, targeted repairs to historic fabric, a New Museum of Bukhara to anchor continuity, and a first thirty-square-metre green intervention that reintroduces shade, gardens, and ecological memory into the city.
