December marks another cycle around the sun and is celebrated through art and cultural practices. Art, music, dance, theater, crafts and poetry are integral to ceremonies and family gatherings and function as offerings to each other. Stories are expressed via intimate folktales, hand-crafted gifts, visual imagery and performances. The San Jose Metropolitan Band performs "The Longest Night" on Dec. 7 at the Hammer Theatre with music inspired by the winter solstice that evokes snowfall, candlelight and resilience. The Silicon Valley Gay Men's Chorus performs "LIGHT" Dec. 12–14 in Campbell celebrating hope and chosen family. The Bay Area Glass Institute offers hands-on glass ornament and bead workshops with one-on-one instructor guidance.
