Untitled Art is launching its first fair in Houston, surprising many by featuring 84 exhibitors, significantly higher than the initially expected 50. Fair director Michael Slenske emphasizes the curated nature of the event, spurred by international galleries eager to join the vibrant Texas art scene. Houston's economic strength, diverse population, and lack of restrictive zoning laws contribute to a flourishing local arts community. The fair will run from September 18 to 21 at the George R. Brown Convention Center, coinciding with Houston’s growing status in the art world, as evidenced by significant arts spending in the region.
While fair director Michael Slenske told The Art Newspaper last year the Houston expo would likely be capped at around 50 exhibitors, the final number was 64% higher due to an overwhelming response.
The invitational Houston edition will still be a curated, boutique fair, and that vibe has always defined Untitled Art. We're seeing a real desire to enter into the Texas art scene.
Houston's robust economy, driven by sectors like energy and medicine, alongside its diverse population, creates a unique backdrop for local artists and the arts community.
A study by the nonprofit Americans for the Arts found arts-related spending in Houston added up to $1.3bn in 2022, beating out Dallas and Fort Worth.
