Tschabalala Self sculpture of two Black lovers will adorn exterior of New Museum when it reopens
Briefly

The New Museum is set to unveil a new sculptural relief titled "Art Lovers," created by Harlem artist Tschabalala Self. This 13ft-tall artwork portrays a Black couple kissing in an expressive embrace and is inspired by Self's previous painting, 'Madly.' The installation marks the opening of the museum's 60,000 sq. ft expansion and is part of the façade sculpture program initiated in 2007. Artistic director Massimiliano Gioni highlighted Self's connection to the city and her role as a significant contemporary voice in art focused on the Black experience.
Self's relationship with the New Museum began in 2017-18, when she was included in the exhibition Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon.
My work is very anecdotal, it's based on experiences, hearsay even. I want people to feel that they are seen and that they are acknowledged.
