This sofa spectacle lights up for winter
"Sofas on wheels. Lighted up. Whimsical. Irreverent. Silly."
"You kind of think of it as a kickoff to winter and the holidays. We're welcoming the darkness and bringing the light."
"I just love that the community just loves this," Maxfield says, "It's just going to keep going on. We couldn't stop if we wanted to. We want to see more. More weird, more fun, more community."
Winterblast in Santa Rosa showcases a nighttime procession of brightly illuminated, whimsically decorated sofas on wheels alongside art, food, and music. Participants design and bring their own sofas, producing playful, irreverent floats that mix holiday and theatrical themes. The event began in 2004 when local artists pushed sofas into the street as a playful community moment and has grown steadily since. The Santa Rosa Urban Arts Partnership, a nonprofit, organizes the annual celebration to foster civic engagement and strengthen community ties. The celebration emphasizes light, creativity, inclusivity, and a desire for more participation and playful expression.
