""Armor is like one of the first evolutionary defenses against the hostile world. I mean, whatever amoeba has slightly tougher skin can go into hotter water. If you have an exoskeleton, you can survive the bite of some other monster," de Boer said."
""I just remember handing that mouse in, and the teachers were silent. And they said 'Jeff, I don't think you have to worry about making jewelry anymore.'""
Jeff de Boer has spent nearly four decades creating intricately detailed miniature suits of plate armor for mice, applying medieval armoring techniques at a minute scale. Childhood exposure to a museum suit of armor and hands-on experience in his sheet-metal fabricator father’s shop spurred early interest and practical skill. Training in jewelry making introduced small-scale tools that enabled faster production and precision. A class submission of a mouse suit generated strong reactions, leading to gallery exhibitions, sales, and commissions. de Boer continues to produce miniature armor, teach the techniques, and preserve metalworking craftsmanship in a novel artistic form.
