"New and updated museums are everywhere you turn: The Studio Museum in Harlem is back and better than ever after a seven-year sabbatical, and the Frick's spent some of its hefty endowment on an expansion and facelift. A new New Museum will soon follow (we hope). And of course, the gallery landscape has shifted beneath our feet: We bid adieu to some, we say hello to others."
"Amy Sherald's road to greatness passes through her own heart. In searching for herself in Black portraiture, she invented a unique style of American realism. She also stood up to the Trump administration when it tried to water down her show at the National Portrait Gallery. By doing both, she solidified her place in art history."
New York experienced significant museum activity, including the Studio Museum in Harlem reopening after seven years and the Frick using endowment funds for expansion and renovation. A new New Museum is expected to appear soon. The gallery scene underwent notable change with both closures and openings. The year included landmark exhibitions by figures such as Amy Sherald, Rashid Johnson, and Wifredo Lam, alongside projects that reframe history, like an Indigenous design survey and the Brooklyn Museum’s presentation of Seydou Keïta. Several hometown surveys honored artists including Jack Whitten, Coco Fusco, and Reverend Joyce McDonald.
