"That's something really beautiful about folk dance. You get to know the culture, the daily activity of the people you are trying to represent."
"We sold almost 800 tickets last year, which was a record for us, and we're expecting this year's show to be even bigger since our membership has doubled in size."
"It's a really great immersive experience within Ithaca to China."
Chinese folk dances reflect the environments and activities of the communities that created them, depicting rainforest creatures, natural phenomena, and village life. Cornell's Amber and Illuminations dance groups perform traditional Chinese dances alongside member-choreographed pieces incorporating diverse styles. Both co-ed groups, founded over 20 years ago, welcome dancers of all skill levels and include undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and staff. Their Rhythms of China showcase on March 13 features pre-choreographed traditional pieces, student-choreographed dances, and a children's dance with young performers from the Ithaca area. Last year's event sold nearly 800 tickets, with expectations for larger attendance this year due to doubled membership.
