Strand townhouses saved as Courtauld unveils plans to reunite institute and gallery
"A row of semi-derelict houses on Strand is to be restored as part of an expansion of the neighbouring Courtauld Institute and art gallery. The Courtauld recently completed a refurbishment of its art gallery spaces and is now turning to the other side of the estate - its teaching and research centres. As part of the refurbishment, their centre facing into Somerset House will be newly connected to a suite of neighbouring townhouses that face out onto Strand."
"The project will secure the long-term future of these townhouses and see their historic façades restored. The Courtauld Institute and Gallery will then be reunited, bringing students, staff, art historians, conservators, curators, visitors and art collection together under one roof. The campus will include modern teaching spaces, a new lecture theatre, and a library within Somerset House's historic subterranean vaults. With a masterplan by 2025 RIBA Stirling Prize-winning architects Witherford Watson Mann,"
