Stephanie Dinkins' AI-driven Data Trust transforms San Jose's ICA
"It's Data Trust, a project by Brooklyn-based artist Stephanie Dinkins that has transformed the downtown San Jose gallery into an immersive, AI-driven environment. It's about land and history and storytelling and technology, but it's really about people. Dinkins, who was named one of Time's Most Influential People in AI, interviewed people in African American communities in the Bay Area to get the oral histories that the project's artificial intelligence uses to generate immersive projections on 14-foot walls"
"images the move and evolve. It's participatory, too, as visitors can tell their own stories into one of several red telephones yes, real old-school telephones and then they, too, become part of the digital tapestry. Data Trust transforms the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art into an immersive, AI-driven environment that centers people, land, history, storytelling and technology. Stephanie Dinkins interviewed African American Bay Area residents to collect oral histories that the installation's artificial intelligence uses to generate evolving projections across 14-foot walls. Visitors can participate by speaking into several red, old-school telephones to contribute their own stories to the digital tapestry. The installation debuted to more than 250 attendees, including academics and city officials, and is supported by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation's Hewlett 50 Arts Commissions. The ICA exhibits the project through March 22, open Thursdays through Sundays, noon to 5 p.m.
