Sofia Coppola Is Bringing 'Marie Antoinette' Back to Versailles
"They let us shoot in places people weren't allowed to normally, like Marie Antoinette's private theater. They were like, 'This is your home.' The Versailles exhibition will screen several scenes from Coppola's film in the very rooms where they were staged, highlighting the deep connection between these storied grounds and her acclaimed creation."
"Her father-in-law, King Louis XV, originally had the elegant neoclassical retreat erected for his mistress, Madame de Pompadour. Once there, the queen infamously made the space her own, outfitting it with delicately painted wallpaper and ornate floral furniture, for starters. Centuries later, Coppola became the first director authorized to film at Versailles."
Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette debuted to critical dismissal at Cannes Film Festival in May 2006, but has since evolved into a celebrated cult classic that won an Academy Award for Best Costume Design. The Palace of Versailles will commemorate the film's 20th anniversary with its first-ever full-scale retrospective, titled "Marie Antoinette by Sofia Coppola," opening in September at the Petit Trianon, the queen's historic chateau. Coppola was the first director authorized to film at Versailles, gaining access to restricted areas including Marie Antoinette's private theater. The exhibition will screen scenes from the film in the original rooms where they were shot, featuring Milena Canonero's award-winning costumes, filming accessories, storyboards, scripts, photographs, and set design sketches.
