S.F. muralist, educator Patricia Rodriguez dies at 80
Briefly

Patricia Rodriguez died on June 30 at UCSF Medical Center. She was a prominent Chicana muralist and co-founder of Las Mujeres Muralistas, the first women-centered muralist collective in the U.S. The collective began painting murals in Balmy Alley in San Francisco. Born in 1944 in Marfa, Texas, Rodriguez moved to California at 11 and pursued art education, earning an MFA in 1975. She was known for her strong character, dedication to teamwork, and advocacy for women in higher education throughout her life.
"I would go almost every day to watch them paint, to see women up on the scaffolding. Just to give them snacks and moral support," said Cervantes.
"She had such a good character, so strong-willed," said former muralista Mendez.
"Patricia, in that sense, was the drive, she put us together and she stayed to make sure the history was known."
Rodriguez was born in 1944 to a single mother in Marfa, Texas.
