Robert Mnuchin, the blue-chip gallerist who loved the drama of the auction saleroom, has died aged 92
"The care and rigour he brought to the gallery extended well beyond its walls, shaping conversations and relationships across the wider art community,"
"In recent years, Mnuchin Gallery has reintroduced a number of historically under recognised artists to a broader audience, with major exhibitions by Ed Clark, Sam Gilliam, Simon Hantai, Kazuo Shiraga, and Alma Thomas, which have contributed to important re-evaluations of these artists' legacies,"
"Pollock might be in some people's minds. Pollock is a great and innovative artist. His drip paintings are phenomenal; but basically he's a one painter career. De Kooning is Picasso-esque,"
Robert Mnuchin died aged 92 on 19 December, a fact confirmed by Mnuchin Gallery. He spent 33 years as head of the trading desk at Goldman Sachs before leaving finance to co-found C&M Arts in 1992 with James Corcoran. He established L&M Arts with Dominique Lévy in 2005 and renamed the gallery Mnuchin Gallery in 2013, becoming a powerful player in the secondary market. Michael McGinnis has assumed management of the gallery. The gallery reintroduced under-recognized artists including Ed Clark, Sam Gilliam, Simon Hantai, Kazuo Shiraga, and Alma Thomas. Mnuchin was known for fierce auction bidding and major purchases such as Roy Lichtenstein’s Sinking Sun for $15.6m.
