Restrained Emotions Simmer in Shinsuke Inoue's Tender Wood Sculptures
"I have virtually no idea what the finished piece will look like until I actually begin working with the wood. As a result, the form often emerges as I carve, and I frequently change my plans midway through the process. Naturally, I keep the many failures a secret."
"The figures often look straight ahead, and at the right angle, they make powerful eye contact with the viewer. And not unlike the way a small, meaningful smile or tiny frown can emerge from the most minute twitch of facial muscles, the striking characters are physically diminutive, but their inner emotional worlds are infinite."
"I hope that the inherent appeal of the wood, combined with its form and color, resonates to convey the essence of humanity itself."
Shinsuke Inoue began woodcarving a decade ago after sculpting his child's likeness to preserve their appearance. His practice evolved into a focused exploration of the human figure through wood. His sculptures feature restrained, emotionally complex expressions with direct gazes that create powerful viewer engagement. Despite their small physical scale, the pieces convey infinite inner emotional worlds. Inoue works intuitively without predetermined plans, allowing the wood's natural properties to guide his hand and shape the final form. He draws inspiration from people he knows, strangers, and photographs, but avoids creating realistic depictions. Instead, he aims to capture universal human essence through the interplay of wood's inherent qualities, form, and color.
