""We remember Kevin for his deeply inspired work which he created from his imagination, from extended observations, from keen research and with spontaneity," gallery owner Charles Froelick said. "He had an infectious and absolute love of painting, visual story-telling with all of its facets from pigment nuances to textures. He was exceedingly articulate and kind. Kadar and I began working together in 1994 at Jamison Thomas Gallery, and he was one of the first artists to join my gallery when I opened in 1995.""
"Kadar's paintings straddled the line between realism and the imaginary. Some works were accomplished landscapes. Many others created scenes that were almost recognizable from nature yet somehow also veered away from realism into realms of fantasy: They depicted things and places that seemed to exist only in the mind. Yet they also created fresh and vivid images that appeared, somehow, to be genuine possibilities, at least in some close if not quite touchable alternate universe."
Kevin Kadar was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1955 and earned a BFA in painting from The Cooper Union in 1978. He relocated west and exhibited work in Coos Bay, Bandon and Eugene beginning in the mid-1980s before establishing a presence in Portland in the early 1990s. He joined Jamison Thomas Gallery and became one of the first artists at Froelick Gallery in 1995, remaining with the gallery until his death. His paintings straddled realism and the imaginary, producing accomplished landscapes and fantastical, mind-born scenes that nonetheless felt like genuine possibilities. He was found dead at his studio during a wellness check on January 6 after a brief medical battle. Fellow artists and colleagues admired his imagination, research, spontaneity, and generous personality.
