Public officials discuss fate of Keller Auditorium in private * Oregon ArtsWatch
"The "two-venue" proposal approved in October 2024 was intended to allow touring Broadway shows to continue uninterrupted before the Keller is closed for renovations, a project that was estimated to take up to two years. Portland Opera and Oregon Ballet Theatre are also major locally focused tenants of he Keller. But a new market feasibility study conducted by Chicago-based Hunden Partners found there is not enough audience demand to support two Broadway-capable centers."
"PSU plans to open it in late 2030. The building is proposed to also include a 1,200-seat theater owned by PSU. "There is insufficient market support for two Broadway-capable venues in Portland. More limited physical programming potential and required downtime would diminish the returns on an investment in a renovated Keller," said the Future of Large-Scale Performing Arts Market Feasibility Study, which was released on Jan. 23."
Three city-appointed groups are privately analyzing the future of the Keller Auditorium while the mayor and the current 12-member City Council will decide after public meetings. A Chicago-based market feasibility study by Hunden Partners found insufficient audience demand to support two Broadway-capable venues in Portland. A two-venue plan approved in October 2024 aimed to build a new city-owned Broadway-capable venue on Portland State University property and allow the Keller to be renovated after continuity of touring shows. PSU plans a Portland Performing Arts + Culture Center by late 2030 that would include a 1,200-seat theater. The study made no proposal about Keller's future.
