New Conservatory Theatre Children's Theatre Company and School was founded in 1981 as a progressive arts education program offering after-school and weekend classes, satellite in-school workshops, and family matinee performances. Parents initiated the founding following a leadership transition from ACT's Young Conservatory and named it the 'New' Conservatory. The company's first home was the Unitarian Center on Franklin and Geary. In 1984 the company moved into 25 Van Ness as tenants after basement theatres were constructed, with Zephyr Entertainment as landlord. In 1986 the YouthAware touring program launched with CDC funding to deliver age-appropriate AIDS prevention and education plays for K-12 students.
