Previewing Performa 2025 Biennial In New York City
""The starting point was to be adventurous," Performa founding director RoseLee Goldberg told Forbes.com."
""What if this were a live performance," Goldberg said. "What if she had these 'players' come off the screen into the live space? It was me dreaming that Shirin might do something that would be startling because she had this deep sense of cinematic choreography and time that included sound and politics and the romance of men and women.""
Performa Biennial commissions contemporary visual artists to create live performance works that merge painting, sculpture, dance, music, and theatre. Artists from varied genres collaborate to produce interdisciplinary live events and new commissions. Twentieth-century Western art contains numerous collaborations between visual artists and performing artists that have often been underrecognized. Historical examples include Jean Cocteau with Igor Stravinsky and Robert Rauschenberg with Merce Cunningham. Performa 2025 will take place across New York City in November, featuring 54 artists and international collectives in partnership with major cultural institutions to stage adventurous experimental projects.
