"French President Emmanuel Macron named art historian and seasoned museum leader Christophe Leribault, who has helmed the Palace of Versailles since 2024, to steer the crisis-stricken Paris museum through major transitions in the wake of the monumental jewel heist that occurred last October."
"Following the intense scrutiny and criticism lobbied against des Cars over the infrastructural and surveillance failures that enabled the robbery, Leribault is now expected to carry out "Nouvelle Renaissance," the massive, multi-year overhaul plan to modernize and fortify the Louvre."
"Leribault will be "responsible for leading important and major projects for the future of the institution, including securing and modernizing the Louvre and continuing the 'Louvre New Renaissance' project.""
Christophe Leribault has been appointed as the new director of the Louvre Museum, replacing Laurence des Cars who resigned on February 24. Leribault, a 62-year-old art historian and experienced museum leader, previously headed the Palace of Versailles since 2024. His appointment comes amid criticism of des Cars over security and infrastructure failures that allowed a significant jewel heist in October. Leribault will oversee the "Nouvelle Renaissance" project, a comprehensive multi-year modernization and security initiative for the Louvre. This marks the second time Leribault has succeeded des Cars in a museum leadership position, having replaced her at the Musée d'Orsay in 2021. Leribault brings extensive experience from leading the Petit Palais and Musée Delacroix in Paris, and previously served as deputy director of the Louvre's Department of Graphic Arts.
