New Dogpatch Gallery to Open This Spring Honoring Ruth Asawa's Work and Legacy
"The gallery will debut May 9 with its first exhibition, curated by her daughters, Aiko Cuneo and Addie Lanier. The title is a reference to Asawa's practice of leaving works unnamed, favoring process over labels."
"I hope the intimate exhibitions at our new Minnesota Street Project space give visitors a sense of who she was as an artist, mother and grandmother and arts advocate, Weverka told the Chronicle."
"In addition to showcasing Asawa's work, the space will reportedly feature exhibitions of Asawa's colleagues, including Imogen Cunningham, Ray Johnson, and Black Mountain College teachers Josef and Anni Albers."
The family of Ruth Asawa is inaugurating a gallery at the Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco to honor her 100th birthday. This 1,714-square-foot space will be the first permanent venue for public access to her art, featuring rotating exhibitions of her wire sculptures, works on paper, and community projects. The gallery opens on May 9, curated by her daughters, and aims to provide insight into Asawa's life as an artist and advocate for arts education. Future exhibitions will also include works by her colleagues and students from the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts.
