""After I first visited Mérida in 2013, I was amazed by the heritage, artists and its art school-now a university-yet I noticed a lack of local exhibiting programmes. Since then, I began dreaming of a biennial which would strengthen and draw visibility for contemporary art in the region.""
""Mérida's art ecosystem has expanded and is multicultural, but more community initiatives are needed," says Mimi Cervera, Lux Perpetua's director, adding that local collectors are increasingly open to experimental practices."
Mérida, the capital of Yucatán, has a vibrant art scene supported by initiatives like the Week of Art Yucatán. The city will host its first biennial from November 2026 to February 2027, curated by Catherine Petitgas and featuring artistic director Abraham Cruzvillegas. The local art community includes many Mexican and international artists, with over 40 galleries present. While the art ecosystem is multicultural, there is a call for more community initiatives to enhance local engagement and support for experimental practices.
