Mummers, wassail and folklore: Bankside marks Twelfth Night with free riverside revels
"Bankside's annual Twelfth Night revels will return on Sunday 4th January, as the Lions Part troupe of actors perform a mummers play for free. A festival, to mark the end of Christmas and the wassailing of the apple trees to wake them from their slumber, is a staple of English customs, and the Lions Part performs an urban rendition each year."
"The Lions Part is a theatre company that collaborates to create seasonal festivals, plays, and theatre pieces that fuse stories, playtexts, music, customs, and heritage. The Twelfth Night celebrations will take place on Sunday 4th January starting at Midday outside the Globe Theatre. It's free to attend, turn up and join in - but they are all volunteers, and are asking for donations to support the event, either on the day, or you can donate to support them here."
Bankside's annual Twelfth Night revels return on Sunday 4th January, beginning at midday outside Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. The event features wassailing to bless the year's harvest, a parade along Bankside with a stop at the pier for a traditional mummers play, and a procession along the Thames Path through Dirty Lane to the renovated Soap Yard in Borough Yards. Activities include dancing with the Fowlers Molly, storytelling, singing, and a Kissing Wishing Tree. The Lions Part company produces seasonal festivals and urban renditions blending stories, playtexts, music, customs, and heritage. Attendance is free; volunteers run the event and donations are requested on the day or online.
