"The starting point was to start thinking outward from here, meaning looking at what's happening around us today, but also the histories that have also shaped this region. We are looking at the oral modes of storytelling [poetry, literature]. Some of them literally emerged through processions. They were producers of cultural forms."
"While I agree that biennales do feel like an international survey of sorts, they are discursive platforms to test what are the ideas that are shaping the present moment and the most important pressure points of thought right now."
The third edition of the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale in Riyadh, curated by Nora Razian and Sabih Ahmed, centers on movement and transition across physical, philosophical, and cultural dimensions. Titled In Interludes and Transitions, the biennale features over 65 multidisciplinary artists from more than 35 countries. The curatorial vision examines regional histories and contemporary developments while drawing inspiration from ceremonial processions and oral storytelling traditions practiced in the region. The Arabic title, Fil Hil Wal Terhal, reflects connection through fluctuating times of change. The curators position the biennale as a discursive platform to explore ideas shaping the present moment and critical pressure points of contemporary thought.
