The Velvet Bandit, a street artist and school lunch lady from Sonoma County, creates impactful art rooted in social justice after losing her job during COVID-19. Originally starting with humorous public service announcements, her work evolved into powerful commentary on critical issues including racial injustice and climate change post-George Floyd's murder. By utilizing a 'paste-up purse' loaded with art materials, she cleverly deploys her pieces quickly in public spaces, catching the eye of celebrities and helping to enhance civic engagement.
"They're really silly and punny. I didn't really think much of it," she said.
"I realized that I could use my art to speak about much bigger issues than Covid," she said.

"Urban beautification" is exactly how she describes her mission.
