Meet the First Cohort of Haystack's Artist Grant Initiative
"It was inspiring to spend time with a group of artists who are navigating their own paths while thinking seriously about how their work lives in the world. The cohort brought curiosity, honesty, and a real openness to the process. It reminded me that building a creative life is as much about community and dialogue as it is about the work itself."
"As an artist working in wood, I was incredibly proud to support such an exciting and experimental group of artists working across craft mediums. I witnessed not only their deep commitment to their own practices, but also their shared ambition to uplift the communities around them."
The Haystack Mountain School of Crafts Artist Grant Initiative, funded by the Windgate Foundation, supported eight emerging artists over six months through unrestricted $10,000 grants and online mentorship. Mentors Vivian Chiu and Cedric Mitchell guided the cohort, emphasizing the importance of community and dialogue in building creative lives. Selected through a competitive review by jurors Curtis Arima and Annie Evelyn, the 2025 awardees represent diverse contemporary craft disciplines including painting, papermaking, glass, neon, ceramics, metalworking, and furniture design. Participants were drawn from past Haystack fellowship recipients since 2018. The initiative highlighted artists' commitment to their individual practices while fostering ambitions to uplift surrounding communities.
