"Migration is a thing that transforms a human into a different type of human ... the self being transformed into this being that doesn't exist there, and doesn't exist here"
"patience and compassion for newcomers."
"migrant experience,"
El Salvador will present a pavilion at the Venice Biennale for the first time during the festival's 61st iteration from May 9 to November 22. Painter and sculptor J. Oscar Molina, born in El Salvador in 1971 and living in Southampton, New York, will represent the country with Cartographies of the Displaced. The exhibition will feature 15 to 18 abstract sculptures from the Children of the World (2019–ongoing) series that evoke huddled figures in motion. The pavilion will explore aspects of the migrant experience rooted in Molina's flight during the country’s civil war and aims to cultivate patience and compassion for newcomers. The announcement occurs amid international concern over alleged human rights abuses and detention practices in El Salvador.
