"The project coincides with the museum's fifteenth anniversary and signals a shift toward a broader role that joins exhibition with production, research, and public exchange. The expansion begins at ground level, where a redesigned lobby and library introduce a new social threshold to the museum. Conceived as a majlis-inspired space, the open plan is organized around modular furniture elements that support reading, conversation, and public programs while remaining adaptable over time."
"With the ground-level phase, architect Lina Ghotmeh establishes the tone for the wider expansion of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art. The library brings together art publications from the region alongside museum and Qatar Museums titles, forming a space that encourages lingering and return visits. A café and expanded book and gift shop extend the sequence, allowing the ground floor to function as a daily point of entry for the campus."
Mathaf is expanding its Doha campus under Lina Ghotmeh to combine exhibition, production, research, and public exchange for its fifteenth anniversary. The ground-level redesign creates a new social threshold with a majlis-inspired lobby and an open-plan library organized around modular furniture to support reading, conversation, and adaptable public programs. The library gathers regional art publications alongside museum and Qatar Museums titles. A café, enlarged book and gift shop make the ground floor a daily entry point. New atrium landmarks, including a large Yan Pei-Ming portrait and commissions honoring Qatar's leadership, reinforce the museum's civic presence. Future phases will transform the plaza and service areas into studios and makers' spaces with ceramics production facilities and shared equipment developed with practicing artists.
