""Manga. An Art of its Own!""
""This is not a comic book exhibition like the others: it's an exhibition that places comic books in parallel with the Guimet's collection,""
""This will allow young readers who know Dragon Ball (the best-selling manga) to discover that it doesn't come out of nowhere,""
The Guimet Museum in Paris presents an exhibition titled "Manga. An Art of its Own!" that juxtaposes ancient Japanese artefacts with modern manga originals. Noh theatre masks, kamishimos, katanas and ancient narrative scrolls sit alongside original drawings from Dragon Ball, One Piece and Naruto. The display traces etymology of the word manga from "man" (spontaneous) and "ga" (drawing) and highlights late 19th-century encounters with Western caricature and trade as catalysts. The exhibition connects kamishibai street theatre, Japan's mythology and diverse manga styles from shojo to the darker gekiga movement to show historical continuities.
