"Ever since this whole endeavor began, we have used private spaces and homes that have become somewhat public. We invite museum curators, directors, artists, and different groups to come in and take tours. This new space allows us to do that on a larger scale."
"The collection first bought a 5,000-square-foot hardware store. Artists love hardware stores! The organization got a little more serious about an official public space about three years ago, and when one became available, literally 150 yards from the train station, she and her team knew the time was right."
The Gochman Family Collection, founded in 2021 by philanthropist Becky Gochman and former gallery owner Zach Feuer, is establishing major exhibition spaces in Katonah, New York, approximately 40 miles north of Manhattan. The 10,000-square-foot venue will display works from the collection's holdings of over 750 artworks and is set to open this fall. Laura Phipps, formerly an associate curator at the Whitney Museum, has been appointed as director. The collection has previously loaned works to more than 100 exhibitions globally and includes pieces by renowned Native artists such as Wendy Red Star and Edgar Heap of Birds. Located 150 yards from the Metro-North train station, the space will make Native art more accessible to Manhattan residents and the broader public.
