Let's Talk About Pee-wee's Playhouse
Briefly

The new HBO documentary, 'Pee-wee As Himself,' revisits Paul Reubens' impactful career, particularly his creation of Pee-wee Herman. The character, known for his eccentric style, became a cultural icon in the 1980s through various formats including live shows, films, and the acclaimed television series 'Pee-wee's Playhouse.' The show, celebrated for its unique and vibrant set design, embodied Reubens' vision of a playful world where the decorations were as lively as the characters. Designers Gary Panter, Wayne White, and Ric Heitzman contributed to forming this surreal, imaginative universe that set Reubens apart from traditional television norms.
"Everything I did and wrote was based in love and my desire to entertain and bring glee and creativity to young people and to everyone," Paul Reubens says in the newly released Max docuseries, Pee-wee As Himself.
"He's a really imaginative person who doesn't let other people make rules for him, so naturally his place would reflect his personality," Gary Panter, the show's lead production designer, told the New York Times in a 1987 interview.
