"It was an easy decision. Our program is shaped by artists and audiences from many backgrounds, including immigrant communities,"
"In that spirit, we are happy to pause operations for the day in solidarity with those advocating for safety, dignity, and equitable treatment."
"Watching those events makes it hard to continue with business as usual, especially in a cultural field that so often speaks about care and responsibility,"
"Fuck ICE."
A nationwide general strike is planned for Friday, January 30, asking people not to go to work, school, or shop for the day. The blackout protests the occupation of Minneapolis by U.S. immigration enforcement and the killing of U.S. citizens, including the shooting of 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti by CBP. Galleries, museums, and art organizations across New York and beyond are joining the shutdown. Participating institutions include David Zwirner, Hauser & Wirth, Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, Anonymous Gallery, Astor Weeks, Silke Lindner, and Margot Samel. Organizers cited solidarity with immigrant communities, safety, dignity, and equitable treatment as reasons to close.
